Terms of Service
Plain-language summary. LGCYBox stores information you choose to enter, encrypted at rest. After a verified notification of your death, we send the memos you addressed to your trustees to those trustees. We don’t do anything with your data otherwise. The full terms below spell that out.
Not a law firm. LGCYBox is a place to store and pass on notes. It is not a will, not estate planning, and not legal or financial advice. Naming a “trustee” here does not create a legal trust or appoint an executor. Make your actual will and arrange your estate with a qualified professional.

1. Who we are
LGCYBox (“we”, “us”, “the service”) is operated by the LGCYBox project. By creating an account you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not create an account.
2. The service
LGCYBox lets you store memos — short notes describing accounts, assets, written messages, video and image files, funeral wishes — encrypted on our servers. You can also create an optional medical profile reached through a short unauthenticated URL you print on a wallet card for emergency medical responders to use before death. You can name people you trust (“trustees”) and address each memo to one or more of them. After a notification of your death is submitted to us, verified by our team, and not contested by you within the grace period, the memos addressed to each trustee will be emailed to that trustee, and the medical profile URL stops resolving.
3. Your account
- You are responsible for keeping your password and the email address on file secure. We will never ask you for your password.
- You may only sign up using your own real identity and email address. Accounts that exist solely to enter another person’s data without that person’s consent will be terminated.
- You can close your account at any time. See the Privacy Policy for what happens to your data on closure.
4. What you put in
- Do not enter passwords, full account numbers, or other live credentials. Use the memos to describe where something is and what to do, not to store secrets that would let an attacker who saw the data act on your behalf.
- Do not store unlawful, threatening, or hateful content.
- You retain ownership of everything you enter. We hold it on your behalf.
- The medical profile is reached by an unauthenticated URL. Anyone holding that URL can read it. Only fill in fields you are comfortable being readable by anyone who obtains your wallet card or bracelet QR, and use the rotate / disable controls if the URL is ever leaked.
5. Pricing
The first 365 days from signup are free. After that, continuing to create or update memos requires a paid subscription of US$10 per year. Reading and deleting your data remains free regardless of subscription status. See the Pricing page for current details.
6. Trustees
- You are responsible for picking trustees you actually trust. We do not screen them.
- We email each trustee once when you nominate them, asking them to confirm they accept the role. Trustees who never accept are not included in any release.
- You can remove a trustee at any time, regardless of subscription status.
7. Death notifications and release
- Anyone can submit a notification of your death to us via the public form. We rate-limit those submissions to deter abuse.
- Each submission is reviewed by a member of our team. If approved, you (the named user) are emailed a contest URL and given at least 72 hours to dispute the notification before any memos are released.
- If you contest within the grace period, no memos are released.
- If you do not contest, the memos addressed to each accepted trustee are emailed to that trustee’s registered address. We do not deliver to trustees who have not accepted the role.
- We do not verify the identity of submitters or the accuracy of the death certificate beyond what a reasonable human review can detect. The grace period exists to backstop that limitation.
8. Encryption
Sensitive memo content is stored encrypted at rest using a separate encryption key. We try hard to keep that key safe but cannot guarantee absolute security. See the Privacy Policy for our processing details.
9. Medical profile availability
The medical profile is an optional feature. The wallet-card URL is served over the public internet and depends on the continued availability of the LGCYBox service, its hosting provider, DNS, and the network between you, us, and whoever is trying to read the URL.
- We do not warrant that the medical URL will be reachable at any given moment. The site may be taken down for planned maintenance, suffer unplanned outages, be unreachable due to DNS, network, certificate or infrastructure failure, or be the target of a denial-of-service or other attack that prevents it from serving requests.
- We are not liable for harm arising from the URL being unreachable. That includes (but is not limited to) delayed treatment, mis-dosing, or any other clinical decision that would have been different had the medical profile been reachable at the time.
- Keep an independent copy. Treat the medical URL as a convenience on top of a paper or offline record, not a substitute. Your blood type, allergies and emergency contact should also live somewhere that does not depend on us being online — a medical bracelet with the information engraved, a wallet card, or the equivalent for your jurisdiction. You acknowledge this obligation when you first create a medical profile.
- Rotate or disable if compromised. If the wallet-card URL is ever leaked, printed on a card that is then lost, or otherwise no longer under your control, it is your responsibility to rotate or disable it from the medical profile page. We will not proactively monitor for suspicious access on your behalf.
10. Not legal or financial advice
- LGCYBox is a storage-and-delivery tool, not a law firm, will-writing service, estate planner, or financial, tax, or medical adviser. Nothing in the service is legal, financial, tax, or medical advice, and using it does not create a solicitor–client or other professional relationship.
- A will memo is not a will. Entering details in a will memo (or any other memo) does not create, witness, amend, revoke, or replace a legally valid will or any other legal instrument. It is only a note telling your trustees where your real documents are and what you want them to know.
- “Trustee” is our word for a contact you choose. Naming someone a trustee in LGCYBox does not appoint them as an executor, trustee, attorney, or personal representative in law, and gives them no legal authority over your estate. Those roles are created only by the proper legal documents in your jurisdiction.
- You are responsible for making and keeping current your actual will, powers of attorney, and estate arrangements with a qualified professional. The memos you store here are a convenience layered on top of those documents, not a substitute for them.
11. Liability
We provide the service “as is”. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free. To the fullest extent permitted by law, our liability to you for any claim arising from your use of the service is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim. Nothing in these Terms limits any liability that cannot be limited or excluded under the law that applies to you — including, in many places, liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence and for fraud.
12. Changes
If we change these Terms in a material way, we will email you at the address on file and ask you to re-accept before continuing to use write features. Read-only access continues unaffected.
